How to Keep Your Mouth Healthy with Anemia

Posted on 8/9/2021 by Langtree Dental Associates
How to Keep Your Mouth Healthy with Anemia It can be difficult to know how to care for your mouth, especially if you are facing other health problems at the same time. For instance, patients with anemia may need special attention to their teeth.
Anemia is a condition in which you have a lack of red blood cells to carry oxygen to your body's tissues. Many forms of anemia exist. It is important to keep your mouth healthy even if you have anemia.

Caring for Your Teeth with Anemia

If you have a lack of red blood cells, it can affect your oral health in a variety of ways. People with anemia tend to have some issues in and around the mouth. It is not uncommon for a patient with anemia to have pain in their tongue. The tongue may also be extremely red in color and swollen. Also, the gums of a patient with anemia may appear faded or even a whiter shade of their normal color.

You will need to be vigilant with your oral health routine if you have anemia. To help prevent gum disease, it is important that you gently brush your teeth and gums twice a day and floss as well. You may want to use an anti-microbial rinse to further help prevent gum disease.

If you are taking medication to control your anemia, be aware that it may have adverse effects on your mouth. For instance, certain medications can lead to oral health issues. Make your dental appointment a high priority every six months.
